Children got lead poisoning from fruit pouches. Here’s what to know.

There’s no safe level of lead exposure. “Lead has no purpose in the human body,” Kevin Osterhoudt, a pediatrician, PRCCEH member and the medical director of the Poison Control Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, wrote in an email to the Washington Post. “So we want to keep our exposure as low as possible.”

Dr. Osterhoudt is one of several researchers and doctors interviewed for this overview of lead exposure and a recent contamination of cinnamon-flavored applesauce fruit pouches. The recalled products include certain Schnucks Cinnamon Applesauce and variety pouches, WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree pouches and certain lots of Weis brand cinnamon applesauce pouches.
