A Penn Doc’s Green Initiative Shows How Environmental Factors Impact Gun Violence

Center member Eugenia South, PhD, of the University of Pennsylvania, was featured in the March issue of Philadelphia Magazine for her work on the connections between environmental factors and gun violence.

“In study after study, South has shown that simple investments in the environment — ­renovating dilapidated houses, clearing trash-strewn lots, planting shrubs and trees — lower gun violence in the surrounding blocks by as much as 29 percent.”
