Roy-2

PRCCEH has been across the Philadelphia region this spring educating students, health professionals and partners about children’s environmental health issues and programs.

Our favorite event was held on April 16th.  Deputy Director Marilyn Howarth, MD, and our Translation Program Coordinator Mikayla White, MPH, joined Rutgers University Assistant Professor Siddhartha Roy, PhD, and his students to present at the STEM Academy in Chester, PA.  They talked about the health impacts of lead in different biology classes.  The STEM Academy students collected soil and baby formula samples and Dr. Roy’s team tested ome of them in class with a handheld metal spectrometer to determine the lead levels.  PRCCEH provided guidance on what the lead soil concentrations meant for exposure risk and health.

Of the 74 soil samples, 18 exceeded 400 ppm, and 11 exceeded 600 ppm, the current EPA residential soil removal management level for Pb.
