If you’re planning holiday gift purchases for loved ones this season, especially the children in your life, make sure you avoid harmful ingredients. Unfortunately, many toxic chemicals are far too frequent in everyday products, gifts, and toys. We’ve included a few highlights below and more links on the Eco-Healthy Child Care® Factsheets webpage.for more information.
Personal care products and candles are popular gifts, but many contain fragrance, a loosely defined term with few health regulations. Many synthetic chemicals in fragrances are derived from petrochemicals and can include endocrine disruptors, known carcinogens, neurotoxicants, and chemicals linked with reproductive birth defects. Additionally, Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) toys like dolls, rubber ducks, pacifiers, and balls may contain phthalates, while some hard plastic products like sippy cups may expose children to Bisphenol A (BPA). Both disrupt children’s endocrine systems.
When possible, stay away from inexpensive children’s costume jewelry, vinyl nap mats, raincoats, backpacks, lunchboxes, teething/bath books, beach balls, rubber ducks, dolls, and imported and antique toys. These have a higher likelihood of containing lead. Additionally, some arts and crafts materials can contain toxic ingredients like lead, cadmium, asbestos and organic solvents. Choose Art & Creative Materials Institute (ACMI) “AP” certified arts and crafts supplies to avoid these.
