Identifying and addressing lead exposure knowledge gaps

Dr. Harriet Okatch will lead this virtual seminar as part of Children’s Environmental Health Day on lead poisoning, misconceptions and hidden exposure, and communicating to the public about lead safety.  Dr. Okatch received a Pilot Project from PRCCEH to evaluate the residential lead remediation programs in the City of Lancaster – the project is still ongoing and will be discussed during the webinar.

Harriet Okatch is an Associate Professor of Public Health at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Harriet’s research focuses on:

  • Lead poisoning prevention (locally and globally)
  • The relationship between anemia status and blood lead levels
  • HIV/AIDS medication adherence.

Harriet’s research projects enroll families to understand the factors that contribute to lead poisoning, the access to and utilization of lead remediation funds, and assessing if residential lead remediation is protective of cognitive development in children. The findings can influence behavior change and effect policy design and implementation.
