Kentucky 2023 Children’s Environmental Health Summit

The 2023 Children’s Environmental Health Summit is a event used to increase awareness and knowledge related to children and the environment. This year’s summit is completely virtual GoToWebinar and will consist of four speakers with these topics: Childhood Exposure to Second-Hand Smoke and Radon, Ambient Air Pollution, Wildfire Smoke and Children’s Health, Surveillance for Ticks and Tick-Borne Pathogens and PFAS and how it affects children in Kentucky

The summit will last approximately half a day. Agenda:

8:00 AM – 8:15 AM – Welcome/Opening Remarks/Children’s Poster Contest Winners

8:15 AM – 9:15 AM : Dr. Wayne Sanderson – Topic: Surveillance for Ticks and Tick-Borne Pathogens: This presentation will identify the major insect vectors in Kentucky and what diseases they potentially carry and determine who is at greatest risk for these exposure to these insects and the diseases they transmit.

9:15 AM – 10:15 AM : Dr. Robert Laumbach – Topic: Ambient Air Pollution, Wildfire Smoke and Children’s Health: This presentation will be to discuss and identify major air pollutants of concern for children’s health in Kentucky and their sources and health effects. This presentation will also educate attendees on action plans to reduce exposure and risk of adverse effects during episodes of high air pollution, for all children and sensitive groups.

10:15 AM – 10:30 AM – Break/Networking 10:30AM – 11:30 AM : Lindi Campbell – Topic: Childhood Exposure to Secondhand Smoke and Radon: This presentation will highlight other causes of lung cancer besides smoking and will emphasize the need and highlight ways to protect children from dangerous toxins that can damage lungs.

11:30 AM – 12:30 PM – Dr. John Bauer/Dr. Maggie Murphy – Topic: PFAS and the Children of Kentucky: What We Should All Know – This presentation will discuss the key elements of PFAS with respect to environmental exposures in Kentucky.
